CITYE18 — All-Electric Urban Delivery Truck (MAN, IAA 2018)
CITYE18 marked MAN’s early step into electric urban distribution. With EV-specific states and new display logic (energy flow, recuperation behaviour, range interpretation), the HMI could not simply reuse familiar “ICE patterns”. The interface had to make new concepts understandable at a glance — in real delivery conditions.
I joined the project in an early phase and translated research inputs into a usable interaction foundation: what must be visible when seconds matter, what can stay secondary, and how navigation stays predictable even as system complexity grows.
What shaped the concept
Ride-along observations with supplier drivers highlighted two constraints that dominated everything: stop-and-go time pressure and short attention windows — plus an international driver context where reading-heavy UI is fragile. This shifted the direction toward icon-first, text-reduced interaction and a flat information architecture with strict prioritisation.
My contribution
Planned and conducted 5 ride-along field studies with supplier drivers
Defined a flat interaction model (max. 2–3 levels) with prioritisation rules
Mapped feature content into clear flows and screens
Created low- to high-fidelity wireframes for concept validation
Shaped EV concepts (e.g., braking vs. recuperation, energy/range states) into understandable visuals
Delivered a handoff-ready UX package for supplier implementation
Role during delivery
After the concept handoff, I remained involved as a UX consultant / co-supervisor, aligning MAN’s intent with supplier execution — reviewing progress, clarifying specifications, and supporting implementation to keep usability consistent.
Result
A language-light, glanceable HMI concept designed for real delivery operation, with a predictable navigation foundation that can scale across driver profiles and future EV programmes.
