Icons are a condensed language. In a fraction of a second, they communicate states, warnings, and functions—translating technical complexity into a form users can interpret safely under time pressure. In a vehicle, this visual clarity is crucial: it determines whether information is understood quickly without unnecessarily distracting the driver.
I particularly enjoy designing icons because every symbol represents more than just a shape: a function, a system state, or a small “story” that comes to life when you tap it. A good icon isn’t decorative—it’s a precise decision aid.
Why icons are so critical in the automotive context
In industrial and automotive user interfaces, icons are key navigation elements. In a vehicle, additional demands come into play: users often have to drive, observe, and decide at the same time. Symbols therefore need to be instantly understandable—language-independent and as robust as possible against misinterpretation.
The challenge: reducing complexity without losing meaning
Icon development is demanding because it has to make complex functions and processes understandable at a glance. In automotive, choosing the right visual metaphor is especially crucial: drivers often make decisions in milliseconds. Icons must therefore be not only aesthetically consistent, but above all unambiguous, testable, and systematic.
